Last spring, we learned that the NYU administration is considering changes to the tuition remission benefit for dependents. Our contract guarantees us continued access to this benefit on the same terms and conditions as our tenured colleagues and other eligible full-time employees. Currently, the benefit provides 90% off of tuition for dependents enrolled at NYU (a benefit of $58,543 for AY 2025-2026) or portable tuition for dependents enrolled at other universities (a benefit of $8,952 for AY 2025-2026).
The provost’s office has said that the current tuition remission benefit will remain in effect for AY 2026-27, and has not yet shared any information about what changes they’re considering. However, preliminary conversations in the T-FSC suggest that one possibility could involve decreasing the NYU benefit and increasing the portable benefit. Next fall, we will be able to discuss potential changes to this benefit with the NYU administration and offer input through our Benefits Union Management Committee. To prepare for those discussions, we are circulating a survey to learn more about how contract faculty have used this benefit, how the benefit has affected us, and how it may affect us in the future.
SURVEY: Tell us about your experience with the tuition remission benefit.
We want to hear from you if you have dependents who have already graduated, who are currently attending college, or who will apply in the future, regardless of their current age. Taking a few minutes to complete the survey will help us understand the impact of this benefit for NYU contract faculty, and ensure that we are prepared to advocate effectively for ourselves.
