Yesterday, colleagues from across NYU came together to answer one question: How can we close the distance and win a strong first contract?

Contract faculty are some of the most productive, revenue-generating workers at NYU. We bring in 23% of all tuition, but all our salaries put together are barely 2% of NYU’s total salary expenditure.

We want to strengthen job security, improve benefits and compensation, and protect the education we offer. The administration wants to eliminate peer review for reappointment and promotion, lock us into inadequate and stagnant wages, keep the ability to worsen our benefits, and erode standards of shared governance and academic freedom.

There is no legal reason the administration can’t agree to fair terms. And, while they allude to budget concerns at the bargaining table, they don’t say they can’t afford to meet our demands. If they did, they’d have to open their books and prove it. They can’t. They’ve got the money.

89% of contract faculty voted to form our union in 2024, but we had to fight to bring the administration to the table and secure a groundbreaking election agreement outside the NLRB. We can win the contract we deserve the same way: by growing our majority support and using a variety of tactics to leverage our collective power.

Join an escalation training next week to reactivate the skills and networks we’ll need to win. This is our biggest and most consequential fight yet, and it will take all of us.
In solidarity,
